A Case Study about Gavin

The Australian Occupational Therapist Frances Arnold, has made a case study on the implementation of VENDLET at 49 year old Gavin.

Gavin has a C4-5-6 complete spinal cord injury, ABI, weighs more than 130 kg and has chronic pressure sores. Gavin was every 5th week hospitalized due to pressure sores which leads to periods of depression.

The staff had low confidence in assisting Gavin to move in bed. There were multiple work cover claims even though different equipment was trialed. Some equipment was not appropriate as it required too much strength from staff; other was too small to handle Gavin's area of weight. Or Gavin found the equipment uncomfortable and it was not effectively redistributing the pressure.

The situation had led to Gavin not feeling safe in his routine and in a bad mood. The relationship between Gavin and the staff was strained. The morning routine was stressful for both parties. At the same time the cost of care was spiraling as well as the cost of pressure sore treatment was significant.

The implementation of VENDLET meant this to patient, staff and costs:

Patient:
Smooth rolling and positioning
Increased privacy
Increased dignity
Increased choice and control over routine
Increased quality of life
Decreased negative self-talk

Staff:
Better physical work environment Simple routines
Better psychological work environment
Enhanced interactions with Gavin

Costs:
Less staff needed at Gavin
Less time taken
Less work cover claims
Less pressure sore treatments

Frances Arnold shows in her case study that the reduction in required staff is so massive, that the cost benefit calculation on buying the VENDLET broke even in five weeks!
